Wednesday, July 15, 2009 In Section Page 8 3 Cheers for the Team Question 1 (a) : Why is cheerleading an expensive sport? Reasons that why cheerleading is an expensive sport is because the cheerleaders need to buy their tailored costumes, new each competition seasons that can cause about $70 or more than that. The price depends on the material and amount of embroidery. The tights that they need to wear cost between $2 to $25. Those are bought from fashion outlets. They even need to buy a pair of gymnastics shoes that cost $90 to $150. Poms-poms cost $50 to $70 pair. All those things that are being mention are imported from other countries. Training mats , hair products, nutritional supplements and vitamins are also needed to be bought. Medical insurance is mostly covered by schools and organisations. Question 1 (b) : What makes cheerleading such a tough sport? It requires a lot of training. They need to cheer, dance, do gymnastics and stunt. This sport is physically demanding. Concussions, sprained ankles, strained muscles and torn hamstrings are among the injuries that cheerleader risk. For young men wrists sprains from lifting the women are common, and partial memory loss after falling from a pyramid and sustaining a concussion is not unheard of either. It actually takes a lot of guts to let someone throw us several metres into the air. The resulting stereotypes can cause some frustration for cheer enthusiasts. Question 2 : What is your opinion of cheerleaders? If given a chance, would you join cheerleading? Why/ why not? My opinion of cheerleaders is that they take a lot of effort to do cheerleading, dance and stunts. It is a risk of doing it. If they did something wrong during their practices, they may be injured and need times to heal their wounds. Costumes that they wear are also expensive and they need to buy new costumes for each and every competition season. If I have the chance to join cheerleading, I would not join because I did not want to risk myself of doing all those gymnastics and stunt. If I got injured, I would have to spent money buying medicine to heal my wounds. Times is also one of my reasons because I did not have so much time to go for the cheerleading practices. To me, studies are important, therefore, I would use my free time and revise my work. |
